How do you choose string or café lights?

Measure the run, decide between warm white and colour, and check how many sets you can link from one plug. Then check the location rating for the exact set: a patio photo or a café-bulb look doesn’t mean a string is rated for outdoors.

Measure the run before picking a set

Run a tape or a piece of string along the actual route, including the sag in any hanging spans, and measure how far it is to the outlet. The lit part of the string and the lead to the plug are two different lengths. The length on the box won’t tell you how long the lead is, how far apart your hooks can be or whether you can add an extension cord. Leave a little extra for tying off at each end and for the drop down to the plug.

These are the specifications and features published for each exact model on its linked product page. “Not published” is an information gap, not a rating or a “no”.

The fairy café string is 12 ft; the colour-changing string is 24 ft with 12 bulbs. Both link up to 4 strings, which works out to 48 ft and 96 ft. Link each model only to more of the same model; don’t mix the two on one run.

Can these string lights go outdoors?

Zone doesn’t list a location rating for these two strings yet. Before you hang either one outside, check the instructions for the string, the power adapter and the connections. A patio photo, the category name and a low-voltage string aren’t the same thing as an outdoor rating.

Colour and controls

Decide whether you want warm white, colour or the option to switch between them. Then check what control comes in the box. The fairy café string includes a remote; the colour-changing string doesn’t list one, so don’t assume it. Both are decoration. If you need light to cook or read by, add a proper task or area light.

How the bulbs change the look

A string lights up as a row of separate points. Big, visible bulbs become part of the decoration, while tiny fairy lights make a finer outline. Bulb spacing and bulb style change the result as much as total length. The same product can feel very different looped around a seating area than strung straight across a yard.

Keep the mood lighting and the working light separate in your plan. String lights make a space feel welcoming, but they usually don’t give enough light to read, prep food or work at a table. If the area needs that, add a task or area light and compare its listed output. How a string looks tells you nothing about how bright the table will be. A plug-in string can also share a timer or smart plug with other patio lights so everything comes on together.

White light, colour and control

Do you want the same warm look every evening, or effects you can change? A remote, switch or app is how you operate the string, but the listing may not describe every setting. If you have a particular mode in mind, or several sets that will be seen together, check that it’s actually listed.

Two products both called “warm white” can still look slightly different side by side. A Kelvin number, where it’s listed, is a more exact guide. For colour strings, “colour changing” usually means all the bulbs change together. Lights where each bulb can show its own colour are a different, more advanced feature, so don’t assume it.

Common questions

What’s the difference between café and fairy string lights?

Café lights usually means larger hanging bulbs on a heavier cord, the kind strung over a patio. Fairy lights usually means many tiny points of light on a thin wire. Brands mix the names, though, and neither tells you the size, brightness or rating, so compare the actual bulbs, cord and controls.

How do I work out the string length I need?

Measure the whole route, not the straight line between the ends. Curves and sagging spans take extra length, often more than people expect. Add the distance from the first light to the outlet separately, since the lead may not be part of the listed length.

Can I connect several sets end to end?

Yes, if the set is linkable, and only up to its limit. Zone’s fairy café string links up to 4 strings (48 ft) and the colour-changing string up to 4 strings (96 ft). Don’t mix different models or brands on one run, even if the plugs look the same.

Does low voltage mean the string is waterproof?

No. Low voltage is about how much electricity the string runs on. Waterproofing is a separate rating, and the power adapter and connections may have different rules from the string itself. Check the location rating before using it outside.

Can I cut string lights shorter like LED tape?

No, unless the instructions say so. String lights are wired differently from tape, and cutting one usually kills the set or leaves bare wires. Choose a set whose length fits the route, or loop the extra out of sight.

Will one remote control every string in a display?

Not unless the product says the remote works across sets. A remote that comes with one string won’t necessarily pair with others or keep their effects in sync. If you want everything to change together, check that first; otherwise expect to control each set on its own.
