Will this bulb fit my fixture?
Updated
Match the socket first. Then check the bulb’s full width and height against the space inside your fixture. An E26 base may fit the socket while the bulb is too wide or tall for the shade.
A19, BR30 and PAR38 describe the bulb, not the socket
Check the bulb’s shape as well as its base. The letters tell you the shape. A19 is the familiar household shape. BR30 and PAR38 are wider reflector shapes, often used to point light in a particular direction. Shape alone does not tell you the beam angle, weather rating or area it can light for plants. Check those details too if you need them.
In these US bulb names, the number gives the bulb’s usual diameter in eighths of an inch. A19 works out to about 2.4 inches across, BR30 to 3.75 inches and PAR38 to 4.75 inches. These names are a guide to size. Always check the exact LED bulb’s dimensions, since its height, neck, heat sink and moving parts can vary.
The historical ENERGY STAR lamp reference explains how these diameter names work. We use it here to explain the names only. It does not mean that a particular Zone light has that certification.
E26 and E39 describe the screw base
Check whether your fixture takes E26 or E39. E26 is the medium screw base common in US homes. E39 is the larger base, also called a mogul base. The numbers give the base’s usual diameter in millimeters. A large bulb does not always use E39: a bright garage bulb can have a large body with an E26 base.
Read the old bulb’s markings and the fixture label instead of guessing from a photo. A bulb can be both PAR38 and E26: one describes its shape and the other its base. E39 is explained here for comparison. This guide does not name a Zone E39 replacement or say you can use a socket adapter.
Measure the space before you order
Start with the light off and cool. For wiring work, turn off power at the breaker, follow local code and use a licensed electrician if unsure. Read the fixture’s bulb limits before measuring. Even if a bulb fits, it still has to meet those limits.
Measure the narrowest opening the bulb must pass through, the space across the shade or cage, and the height above the socket. Include any neck or lip near the socket. A globe can be wide in the middle but too narrow at the opening. Take a photo of the fixture label. Keep the old bulb’s model number with your measurements.
Compare the whole bulb, including its base, with the fixture drawing and the space its instructions require. Make sure both height measurements start at the same point. If you are unsure how much room you need, ask for a drawing with dimensions. Never force a bulb, remove a protective cover or change the fixture to make a large bulb fit.
Why a garage bulb can be much bigger
Measure before buying a TB50: it uses E26, but its body is much bigger than a normal household bulb. See its exact size in the table. For comparison, an ordinary A19 is roughly 2.4 inches wide and about 4.3 inches tall. That height is only a reference; A19 bulbs vary. The shaded garage bulb has a different shape, so check each model.
| Zone light | Socket | Published size |

| Grow light bulbZ-GR-CB40 | E26 socket (screw-in) | 3.54 x 3.54 x 8.66 in |
These details come from each model’s linked product page. “Not published” means the information is missing. It does not mean the feature is absent or that a use is allowed.
A grow bulb can be bigger than you expect too. The E26 grow bulb in this table has its own dimensions. E26 does not mean it will fit a desk-lamp shade. Measure the space with any reflector or guard in place. Check that nothing blocks the light from the leaves or work surface you want to light.
Check the label after checking the size
Check that the bulb’s instructions allow use in your fixture, including an enclosed fixture, its location and the direction the bulb faces. Enclosed fixtures hold heat differently from open holders. If the instructions do not say whether enclosed use is allowed, ask before buying. Also check compatibility with garage-door openers and sensor fixtures. A matching socket is not enough.
Compare the bulb’s actual watts with the fixture’s allowed bulb rating. A label saying it replaces a certain household wattage describes roughly how bright it is, not how much power the LED uses. Check voltage and dimming too. Outdoors, check the location ratings of both bulb and fixture. A covered porch is not always dry.
Common questions
Can an A19 and a BR30 use the same socket?
They can, but read both labels. A BR30 is wider, so it may fit the socket but not the shade. It also points light in a direction, which can change how the room looks.
Does PAR38 mean the bulb is waterproof?
No. PAR38 tells you the bulb’s shape and usual diameter. Check that the exact bulb and fixture are both approved for the outdoor use you have in mind.
Can I replace a normal bulb with the TB50?
Only if the fixture’s size, electrical limits and intended use match the TB50’s published details. Measure first: it is bigger than an ordinary A19. Check its brightness separately too, since it gives off a lot of light.
Is an adapter the answer to an E26/E39 mismatch?
Do not assume an adapter solves the problem. It changes how the bulb fits and does not mean the electrical setup or intended use is suitable. Ask a licensed electrician about your fixture and the bulb you want to use.
What if the dimensions are not published?
Ask for the exact model’s width, height and required space before buying. Send your fixture measurements and a label photo to Zone support. You cannot get reliable dimensions from a product photo.
Which product should I look at next?
Look at garage lights for bright garage bulbs and grow lights for plants. For a regular room, start with the home-light category below. Check fit first, then choose brightness and color.
