Built-in LED or replaceable bulb: which to buy?
Updated
What the two types really are
A built-in LED fixture has its light source sealed into the body. When the light is done, you replace the whole fixture. A bulb-style fixture has a socket, so you can change the bulb when it fails or when you want a different look. Shop lights, garage panels and slim recessed lights are common built-in types. Porch lanterns and many lamps are common bulb types.
Where built-in LEDs make sense
Built-in LEDs suit places you rarely touch, such as a garage ceiling, a workshop or the underside of a kitchen cabinet. The shape is slim and the light is spread evenly, so there is no bare bulb to glare at you. Our guide to shop light types shows how these fixtures differ, and the product page for the integrated shop light lists the exact details.
Where replaceable bulbs make sense
Bulbs are a better fit when you like to change things. You can try a warmer or cooler color, pick a different shape, or fix a problem by swapping one bulb. This is also handy in a room where taste may change, or where a fixture is hard to replace. Check the base, size and shape first. Our bulb fit guide walks through those checks, and the filament bulb page lists exact specifications.
Why long life is not the whole story
Government LED guidance says good LED products last far longer than older bulbs, but it also warns that the electronics can fail before the LEDs wear out. With a built-in fixture, a failed driver can mean replacing the whole light. With a bulb, you replace only the bulb. This is one reason to look at build quality and the return terms at the store, not only the promised life.
A simple way to decide
Ask three questions. How hard is the light to reach? How much do you want to change the look later? How much do you care about a slim, tidy shape? High and hard to reach points toward built-in. Likely to change points toward bulbs. If you plan to add dimming, read our dimming and flicker guide before you buy, because the light and the control both matter.

Common questions
Is a built-in LED fixture harder to repair?
Usually yes. You normally replace the whole fixture rather than one part, so think about this for lights that are costly or hard to reach.
Can I switch a bulb fixture to a different color later?
Often you can, by choosing a bulb with another color setting. Check the base and shape first, then read the product page for details.
Which is better for a garage?
Many people like built-in fixtures overhead because they are slim and even. A bulb fixture is still fine if you want easy swaps. See our garage lighting guides for how much light you need.
Do built-in fixtures save more energy?
Not by that fact alone. Brightness per watt depends on the product, so compare lumens and watts on the product page. Our lumens versus watts guide explains how.
