What UL 486G direct bury means
UL 486G covers sealed splicing connectors: the tests for an ordinary twist-on cap, plus moisture ingress, for damp, wet and direct-burial locations. Both Zone silicone-filled caps (R3, R6) carry it, as published on their listings.
Typical splices that sit underground or outside: a run to a post light, landscape lighting and other low-voltage wiring, and splices in a damp junction box. The listing is UL 486G direct bury; it is not a separate approval for any one system, such as irrigation controls. Check the listing and your local code for the job.
Are wire nuts waterproof? Zone’s standard twist-on wire nuts are listed to UL 486C, which does not include the moisture test. For a wet or buried splice, use a cap listed to UL 486G.
