How should workshop lighting differ from garage lighting?
A garage you park in needs even light across the floor so you can see the car, the shelves and the door. A workshop needs that plus strong light right where your hands and tools are. Most garages that double as workshops need both: overhead lights and a task light.
Before wiring, turn off power at the breaker; follow local code; use a licensed electrician if unsure. Follow the instructions for the exact light or connector.
Start with what you do in the space
Before you pick lights, list what’s in the room: where the car parks, the shelves, the workbench and any tools or machines. Overhead lights get blocked by your own body, an open cabinet or the car’s hood. A task light puts strong light on one surface, like the bench, so you don’t have to make the whole garage that bright.

These are the specifications and features published for each exact model on its linked product page. “Not published” is an information gap, not a rating or a “no”.
The two-light shop fixture takes separate tubes, while an integrated fixture has the LEDs built in. If the fixture takes tubes, check which tube type it’s made for; how much light you get depends on the tubes you put in. The vapor-tight light has a sealed housing and is made for damp spaces. Zone hasn’t published an IP rating number for it.
When does a portable work light help?
When the job moves around, or when a ceiling light leaves a shadow right where you’re working. Under a car, inside a cabinet or at the far end of a bench, a light you can pick up and aim works better than adding another ceiling fixture. Check how it stands, clamps or hangs, and where the cord will run. The Zone clamp light and portable stand light below are two ways to do this. Neither one replaces overhead lighting for the whole room.
Don’t pick by lumens alone
Use the garage lumens guide for a starting number, then think about where the lights go, what blocks them and where you work. Colour temperature only changes how white the light looks; it doesn’t help you see detail or colours more accurately. If the space gets damp, check the location rating. Confirm how each light mounts and gets power before you order.
There’s no single number of lights or spacing that works for every workshop. Ceiling height, room size and how each light spreads its beam all change the answer.
How overhead and task lighting work together
Overhead light, also called general or ambient light, lets you see the whole room: where the car is, what’s on the shelves, where you’re walking. Task light is aimed at one job, like the bench, a tool station or a spot where you check paint or parts. A garage can have several task areas and still need plain overhead light everywhere else.
A quick sketch helps. Draw the bench, the shelves and where you stand. A light behind your shoulder throws your shadow onto the bench. A light pointed at a shiny surface bounces glare into your eyes. Once you see that, it’s clear why another ceiling light often won’t fix a dark bench, but a light in front of you will.
Plan for how the room really gets used
A garage looks different with the car pulled in, the overhead door open or a cabinet door swung out. A workshop changes when a big project sits on the bench. Plan the lights for those everyday situations, not for the empty, tidy floor you see in product photos.
It also helps to switch overhead and task lights separately, so you can turn on just the general light to grab something from a shelf and add the bench light when you sit down to work. Check how each light you choose is switched before you plan the circuits.
Common questions
Does a workshop need more lights than a garage?
Not always more lights, but more light at the work surface. The table in the lumens guide uses 50 footcandles for general workshop use against 20 for parking, plus more at the bench. A big two-car garage may still need more fixtures just to cover the floor evenly. See the lumens table for the numbers.
What’s the best light layout for a garage workbench?
Put the light in front of you, over the front edge of the bench, so your body doesn’t block it. If there are shelves or cabinets above the bench, mount a light under them or use a clamp light. Spacing depends on the lights you choose, so use their output figures rather than a fixed rule.
Are adjustable garage panel lights enough for detailed work?
Sometimes. You can tilt the panels toward the bench, which helps, but they’re still on the ceiling and a shelf or a big project can block them. If the bench stays shadowed, add a task light.
Should shelves have their own lights?
Only if you can’t see what’s on them. Deep shelves and shelves stacked close together leave labels and small parts in the dark. A small light under a shelf can help. Make sure it fits the shelf depth and has a way to get power.
Will cooler white light help me see small details?
Not much on its own. A cooler white can feel crisper, but what really helps you see detail is enough light, coming from the right direction, without shadows. If you need to tell colours apart, look at CRI, not Kelvin.
Can I use a garage light in a damp workshop?
Only if that light is rated for damp locations. Many shop lights are made for dry, indoor spaces only. Check the location rating in the table above and on the product page. A tough-looking housing isn’t the same as a damp rating.
